Our mission is to provide life saving equipment and medication donated from CF patients in first world countries to CF warriors in third world countries, where healthcare access and/or insurance coverage is lacking with the goal of "providing more mornings to CF warriors the world over." We here at CFV4L believe that no CF equipment or medication should sit idly on a shelf or in a closet, that could otherwise bring new hope, vitality, and life to fellow patients in other countries. Additionally, we seek to build a robust international community of CF warriors by connecting our recipients and donors with other CF patients through social media, ZOOM meetings and virtual CF conferences and events so that no one has to fight this disease alone.
Some may say CF Vests for Life was spawned though coincidence, while others say there is no such thing as coincidence.
In early January 2020, a young lady with CF living in Chile, who I had never met, contacted me on social media, and asked if I had a Vest to donate. After some thought, I realized I could donate mine, as I no longer needed it post-transplant. Two or three weeks later, another CFer, this time in Lebanon, also one I had never met, contacted me via social media, and requested a Vest. After posting the ask on Facebook, a young lady with CF in Ohio offered to donate hers which she no longer needed, and I was fortunate to facilitate the transfer.
I began to think there must be a wider gap in our community beyond just these two I had observed, and one that could be filled by the transfer of Vests from CFers who no longer needed them, to those in our community who are without the means of obtaining this life-extending tool.
It was during this time when I began to work with fellow CFer Mark Tremblay during a CF conference, and shared with him my Vest transfer stories. Seeing that we both grasped this vision of a quest to fill this void between the Vest haves and have nots in our CF community, in June 2020, the CF Vests for Life Foundation was created. Do you believe in coincidence?
In just three short months since our inception we’ve collected $320,000 in equipment and medication from 23 miracle donors and we’ve shipped approximately $130,000 in equipment and medication to 8 CF warriors in 7 countries from the U.K. to Swaziland South Africa. We’ve done all of that with only $17,000 in cash contributions. We’re striving to ship a total of $1 M in equipment and medications to more than 50 recipients by our first anniversary which we can’t do without the continued robust support from our CF community, generous cash supporters and precious miracle donors who provide the equipment and medication we need to continue bringing more mornings to CF warriors the world over.
